Volkshotel Amsterdam

Volkshotel is located in a 1960's concrete building, the former headquarters of De Volkskrant newspaper, next to Wibautstraat Metro Station, in Amsterdam Oost (East Amsterdam). After the newspaper moved out, the building was transformed by the Urban Resort Foundation into workspaces for hundreds of creatives. Since June 27 of 2014, is occupied by Volkshotel with 172 rooms, a café, an exhibition space, a nightclub, a restaurant and a rooftop cocktail bar complete with hot tubs and a sauna! The remaining space of the building still offers workspaces for creative businesses that can be found in the Broedplaats VKG in the back wing of the building.

The interior of this multipurpose hotel is the work of Dutch designer Bas van Tol. Visual references to the building’s history occur throughout such as archive photographs of Amsterdam’s counterculture on the corridor walls and prints silk-screened by hand directly onto the bedroom walls. The rooms are stylish and simple, intelligently designed with raw materias of wood, glass and concrete. There are also nine special rooms that were each designed by a different designer or design team.
